  • "When we can see that the world is our home and that everyone who lives in it is our family, we can feel more compassion for one another."
  • "If you want to make it, you have to make it yourself."

Author: William Kamkwamba

William Kamkwamba, born on August 5, 1987, in Malawi, emerged from humble beginnings on his family's farm in Wimbe. After completing the 8th grade at Wimbe Primary School, his education was interrupted due to a devastating famine that left his family unable to afford school fees. Undeterred, William utilized the resources available to him, borrowing books from a local lending library and discovering a passion for innovation. Inspired by a textbook featuring a wind turbine, he crafted a windmill using discarded materials, successfully providing electricity to his home and community. His ingenuity and determination led to further projects focused on clean water, malaria prevention, and sustainable energy solutions. In 2008, he became one of the first students at the African Leadership Academy, dedicated to fostering leadership and entrepreneurship across Africa. William’s remarkable journey is chronicled in his memoir, *The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind*, co-authored with Bryan Mealer.
